Torben Giehler

With a focus on the citygrid of Berlin, he is trying to understand and process our increasingly complex but also exciting digital world through his paintings. The multi-layered, transparent acrylic layers create pictorial abstract spaces in which one can navigate autonomously, as in a virtual reality simulation.

Torben Giehler (*1973, born in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany) studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1995-1999. After moving to New York City, he had his first solo exhibition at the Leo Koenig Inc. gallery. Numerous international exhibitions in galleries and museums followed. He has lived and worked in Berlin since 2009.

In 2005, Torben Giehler was represented at the Prague Biennale and in “Greater NY” at MoMA PS1 in New York. In 2019 he took part in the Havana Bienale in Cuba. Furthermore, his works were exhibited in renowned museums such as the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Wilhelm-Hack Museum in Ludwigshafen, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Kunsthalle Zürich, Den Frie Udstillingsbygning in Copenhagen, Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington DC, Cleveland Museum of Art, New Orleans Museum of Art, Carnegie Art Museum, Centro de Arte Salamanca, Nagoya Museum of Fine Arts and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
